Following the success of JOWMA’s swim safety event, Goodnight Moon Layette boutique in Cedarhurst once again hosted an educational event aimed at enhancing the well-being of the community. She addressed key topics such as the selection of preferred sunscreen types, the benefits of protective clothing, and debunking the myth of a “safe tan.” (Spoiler alert-there’s no such thing!). “I loved the opportunity to speak to my community about the very important topic sun protection. Sun safety is relevant to everyone and I was happy to provide my audience with the important facts and dispel common myths about sunscreen and more,” Dr Fruchter described. The lecture highlighted the importance of selecting and applying sunscreen correctly. Dr. Fruchter emphasized the significance of broad-spectrum sunscreens with a high SPF, which offer protection against both UVA and UVB rays. She shared practical tips on applying sunscreen liberally and regularly, ensuring that all exposed areas of the body are adequately covered. Attendees were encouraged to be diligent in reapplying sunscreen every two hours, especially during prolonged sun exposure or water-based activities. In addition to sunscreen, Dr. Fruchter highlighted the role of protective clothing in safeguarding the skin. She discussed the benefits of wearing wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and clothing with built-in sun protection, such as UPF-rated fabrics. Attendees learned how these measures can help reduce the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer, ultimately promoting long-term skin health. “Learning about skin safety in such a beautiful atmosphere was inspiring and fun. It really motivated the community to take such an important topic seriously while simultaneously enjoying each other’s company and delicious food!,” shared Leah Begun. The event had fun giveaways, like cute sunglasses, and participants were entered into two raffles for a Goodnight Moon gift certificate and a facial to Touch of Beauty NY with Mina Black. As the lecture concluded, over 20 attendees departed with a newfound awareness of the significance of protecting their skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
